Case Study: Iris Diagnostics

Iris Diagnostics logoIris Diagnostics, a division of Iris International, Inc. (NASDAQ: IRIS), manufactures and sells urinalysis systems for use in hospitals and commercial laboratories worldwide.  Based on patented and proprietary technology, their automated urinalysis system utilizes chemical reagents to detect the presence of molecules in urine samples.  These systems are designed to provide faster and more complete results, plus labor savings over manual methods of performing microscopy, one of the most labor intensive procedures in a clinical laboratory.  The reagents used must be of the correct type, freshness, and authenticity in order to deliver the most accurate results.  Iris Diagnostics incorporated SkyeTek's RFID readers and ReaderWare Security software to prevent reagent counterfeiting.

 Requirements:

  • Embed RFID reader technology inside the existing urinalysis system design.
  • Authenticate reagents to be the correct type, freshness and authenticity.
  • State-of-the-art hashing and encryption to prevent counterfeiting.
  • Remote field-upgradeable cryptographic keys and algorithms in case they are compromised.
  • Integrate RFID tag technology on the reagent container.
  • Simple applicaton programming interface (API) that does not require RFID expertise.
  • Minimal cost impact to the production of the urinalysis system.

Solution:

  • SkyeTek software and security provided industry-leading encryption and hashing, compliant with the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS).
  • SkyeTek's SkyeModule M2 HF reader was embedded in the automated urinalysis system, providing ISO 15693 and ISO 14443A/B compliance.
  • Integrating generic ISO 15693-compliant tags into the solution provided significant cost savings over proprietary tags (about 15 cents per tag rather than 30 to 50 cents per tag).
  • SkyeTek's Application Programming Interface (API) provided developers with a simple, easy-to-use API that does not require RFID expertise and allowed them to begin development immediately.

Summary

Iris Diagnostic's SkyeTek-based solution had a minimum impact on their urinalysis system production costs, while significantly lowering the costs and risks associated with counterfeit reagents that can undermine the reliability of test results.
