Advanced Universal Reader Architecture Unveiled
Westminster, Colo., April 5, 2006 – SkyeTek, Inc., the leading provider of embedded RFID reader technology and developer of ReaderWare™, today introduced AURA™, the Advanced Universal Reader Architecture. This new architecture represents the next generation of SkyeTek’s open-architected, modular RFID reader technology that was originally introduced nearly one year ago. AURA is comprised of two components:
- ReaderWare, a layer of software that provides platform- and protocol-independent reader functionality and intelligent application support, and
- ReaderDNA™, reference designs that leverage a common hardware architecture across SkyeTek’s HF and UHF reader modules
Traditional RFID readers are monolithic finished products with high cost structures that to date have limited RFID to supply chain applications. AURA represents a significant advancement of SkyeTek’s reader architecture that extends RFID adoption into mainstream applications by disaggregating the reader into a software layer optimized for intelligence and hardware layer optimized for price-performance. With AURA, SkyeTek enables customers to license ReaderWare and run it on their own reader module based on all or part of ReaderDNA reference designs. This business model provides the seamless integration, low cost structure, and high ROI needed by customers to embed RFID as a feature in their existing product lines. SkyeTek has built significant momentum in the marketplace with this business model as customers embedding RFID into their products represent the majority of its overall hardware and software sales.
“What we are seeing with RFID readers is no different than what we saw with computers, internet subscriptions, and Wi-Fi. These markets started off with vertically-integrated solutions encumbered by high cost structures. Widespread adoption did not occur until new entrants horizontally disaggregated these value chains resulting in lower costs and increased performance,” said Rob Balgley, CEO of SkyeTek, Inc. “The RFID reader market is no different – black-box readers will give way to disaggregated, embeddable readers comprised of software optimized for RFID-enabled applications and hardware designed to exploit Moore’s Law. With AURA, SkyeTek leads the RFID market’s transition to intelligent, low-cost reader modules and software that can be embedded into mainstream products.”
Customers adopting AURA gain a single architecture for reader hardware and software that makes the task of designing, building, and maintaining an RFID application simple, manageable, and cost efficient over the lifetime of the application. ReaderWare decouples reader software from hardware providing a platform-independent, Tagnostic™ interface that is common among SkyeTek reader modules and allowing code re-use as the underlying protocols, cryptography, and components evolve. ReaderDNA shares common tag interoperability, protocol support, processor, form factor, and power supply across RFID reader modules enabling faster development cycles and greater scale economies. SkyeTek customers that have incorporated AURA into their product lines are benefiting from short development cycles, fast time-to-market, and high ROI.
