SkyeSecurity provides a robust security layer to SkyeOS, the operating system for all SkyeTek reader modules.  With support for standards-based and proprietary security algorithms, SkyeSecurity keeps applications years ahead of counterfeiters and hackers.

SkyeTek provides the industry’s most advanced security technology for protecting integrity and privacy across both HF and UHF applications.  By integrating state-of-the-art, open standard encryption and hashing into its embedded RFID readers in addition to supporting proprietary security algorithms from leading companies, SkyeTek has put  RFID security on par with mature technology industries without impacting form, fit, or cost. 

Standards-Based Security

SkyeTek's standards-based approach enables secure support for generic tags, saving SkyeTek customers up to 70 percent over some systems using proprietary security schemes.  In keeping with SkyeTek's overall Advanced Universal Reader Architecture (AURA), SkyeTek's security design is flexible to change in the future as security standards evolve, thus providing SkyeTek customers significant investment protection.

SkyeTek security encompasses the following cryptographic algorithms used by the U.S. Department of Defense and global financial services:

  • Advanced Encryption Standard (AES)
  • Digital Encryption Standard (DES)
  • Triple DES (TDEA or 3DES)
  • Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA)
  • Message-Digest algorithm 5 (MD5)

Proprietary Security


In order to offer a breadth of security solutions, SkyeTek also supports proprietary encryption algorithms implemented in the tag. These proprietary schemes are tailored to provide enhanced security for specific markets such as ticketing, asset tracking and ePedigree. SkyeTek has built firmware support in its readers for the following proprietary encryption:

  • Mifare from Phillips/NXP
  • CryptoRF from Atmel
